The Mt. Vernon Education Foundation is proud to announce the approval of funding for a year-long subscription to Scholastic News Magazine for every first-grade student at Fortville Elementary. This request, submitted by the passionate and dedicated first-grade teaching team—Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Spooner, Mrs. Rigsbee, Mrs. Tucker, and Mrs. Dewing—stood out as a meaningful way to support both academic learning and family engagement.
This grant supported the Social Studies and Science curriculum currently in place at the primary level, the Scholastic News subscription serves as an essential resource—bringing structured, engaging content that helps to enhance educational instruction. Each weekly issue introduces students to relevant seasonal themes, holidays, current events, and real-world topics in a format that is age-appropriate and aligned with foundational standards.
In addition to the printed magazine, the subscription includes a digital component with real-world videos that introduce and extend lessons while building background knowledge. These multimedia tools help enrich classroom instruction and support diverse learning styles.
The Foundation was especially inspired by how this resource extends learning beyond the classroom. Since students take each issue home, Scholastic News becomes a literacy tool for the entire family, especially in households where access to educational literature may be limited. This initiative supports reading, family conversations, and curiosity about the world around them.
This grant perfectly reflects the mission of the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation—to empower educators, inspire students, and create opportunities for learning that have lasting impact. We are honored to support Fortville Elementary’s first-grade team in their commitment to excellence and innovation in education.
