“Fueling Curiosity Through Fiction and Nonfiction: A 5th Grade Literacy Boost”

MVEF $500 Mini-Grant

When we reviewed Mrs. Sarah Cameron’s mini grant request for a class set of Kokopelli’s Flute by Will Hobbs and Scholastic News magazines, we immediately recognized how thoughtful and intentional this request was. It wasn’t just about buying books and magazines—it was about enhancing the learning experience for her 5th grade students in a way that connected deeply with their curriculum.

In the first quarter, her students dive into analyzing characters, exploring plot development, and understanding point of view—critical skills in developing young readers into thoughtful, critical thinkers. Kokopelli’s Flute aligns beautifully with these essential learnings. The novel invites students into a compelling story while offering rich opportunities to engage with literary elements. It’s the kind of story that makes students think, reflect, and see themselves in the journey.

And by pairing the novel study with Scholastic News, Mrs. Cameron is extending learning beyond fiction, giving her students access to current, age-appropriate nonfiction texts that build reading stamina, comprehension, and real-world awareness.

This grant was important to fund because it supports a holistic approach to literacy—blending narrative and informational texts, aligned with academic standards, and tailored to engage and empower learners. It ensures that every child in her classroom can participate equally in these experiences, with the right resources in their hands.

At the Foundation, we know that the magic of learning happens when the right tools meet a passionate teacher. This grant helps make that magic happen in Mrs. Cameron’s classroom.
